“Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk everyone in his path; and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.” Joel 2:8
Today’s Christian daily devotional
Hannah’s tired feet dragged as she trudged up the steps to her front door. Grabbing her mail, she couldn’t stop thinking about her favorite chair just beyond the door.
The irony was she would still be sitting in front of a large screen; only it would be her beloved television, coupled with her favorite glass of merlot.
After opening the door, she tosses the mail on the table nearby. A curious looking envelope peeks between the typical mailers.
Hannah’s strengths never lied in her restraint. As quickly as she noticed the large red envelope with the silver seal, her tired eyes lit up with a new vigor. She had to see what all the pomp and circumstance was about…
“Can you believe it has been twenty years?” She reads the caption under a black and white photo of her high school class.
“Ugh.” Tossing the invitation back on the table, she heads straight to the rack of wine.
As Hannah pours herself a generous glass, her mind drifts back to some of the most painful memories of her life. Would there ever be a perfect day to face those fears?
Waltzing back to the front door, she retrieves the glossy invite. Her eyes are drawn to the most beautiful girl in the photo: Kyra.
Suddenly, Hannah gets her epiphany. There’s an obstacle that is actually stopping her from wanting to take a trip down memory lane; and her name was Kyra.
“She’s probably still perfect.” Hannah huffs as she takes a hefty swig.
It was something more than the extra fifteen pounds; the failed marriage and her tedious job that made Hannah feel so insecure. The very thought of Kyra doing better than her is what bothered Hannah the most.
There was always a strong rivalry between the two girls. Despite the fact that Kyra was clueless to its existence, this competition was very real nonetheless.
If Kyra tried out for squad leader, so did Hannah. When Kyra decided to join the drama team, Hannah followed suit. If Hannah saw Kyra’s name on the honor roll, you could bet that the next semester both of their names would be listed.
But, in all her efforts, Hannah never felt like she was winning. She was too consumed with following Kyra’s every move to even enjoy her success.
It wasn’t until Hannah married and moved out of state before she really broke free from the obsessive spell she was under.
But, after a few short months, Hannah found another muse to attach her efforts and the crazy ride started all over again…
In Joel 2:8, the Bible talks about the collective victory of the Believers who keep their eyes on the Lord (and off of each other).
God has a plan for every individual believer. How can any of us achieve His plan for our lives if we are busy being consumed with jealousy or envy? The whole army of God suffers when we aren’t working with God and are working against each other.
Maybe your life hasn’t progressed because you’re simply on the wrong path. Have you asked God if you are following your idea of success or His? Open your heart to accepting the wonderful blessings God has for your individual life and keep your eyes on the only one who will set you straight. Anything else is just a detour, and life is too short for that.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I have no idea where I should be at today. I have a feeling that I have been stopping my own success.
My wheels are spinning at a frantic pace and I haven’t gotten anywhere but tired.
Lord, I give up. I have no idea what success for me looks like in your eyes. Can you show me?
I have always been a realistic and goal oriented person. So, although I love you and believe in you, actually following you is very hard for me. I am distracted by the concrete—what I can see feels like something I can attain.
Lord, give me a vision, a dream, a passion. One that you have had for my life ever since the day you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I’m ready to see it now. I’m ready to let go of everything else.
In Jesus’ precious name, bless me so I can live with a purpose, passion and joy. Amen.”
