“He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool; but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. Proverbs 28:26 Today’s Christian daily devotional
“Hey Parker, you ready for Varsity team this year?” Kyle swung his legs over the rail between them. He landed on the lunch bench gracefully, minus the large thud.
“Yeah, I think so.” Adam shrugged his shoulders, glancing up at his friend. What he saw forced him to give Kyle a double take. It was hard not to notice that his childhood buddy had gained some serious muscle over the summer.
“Sure doesn’t look like it.” He reached over and flicked Adam’s skinny bicep; swiping a few French-fries from his tray.
“So, how’d you do that? I’ve seen your dad. I know those guns can’t be the results of pure genetics.” Adam chucked while grabbing one of his fries back.
“Don’t tell anyone.” Kyle moved in closer, lowering his voice.
“This guy from the gym hooked me up with some ‘supplements’—and not the kind you get at GNC. If you want, I’ll introduce you to him.” Kyle lifted his brows deviously.
Adam wasn’t surprised. Kyle was pretty vocal about his dreams of one day becoming a professional linebacker. He always said he would do whatever it took to make it and from the looks of Kyle’s body, he was holding true to his promises.
“But, aren’t steroids dangerous and illegal? You’re not worried about what it will end up costing you in the long run?” Adam knew that Kyle had a way of taking everything he did to the extreme.
“Na, man. I’m going to live for today. Who knows? Tomorrow I might not be here. I gotta leave my mark on the world.” Kyle stood up, stretching his arms to the ceiling. Making sure that everyone in the lunchroom had a chance to see his powerful frame.
I have been told numerous times throughout my life to: “Trust in your heart” or “Go with how you feel.” And, I have taken that advice thinking that it would lead me into happiness. Sadly, it never did.
After reading Proverbs 28:26, I soon realized why my own wisdom never really seemed to work. My heart is just not as wise as I’d like to think it is.
Unfortunately, it took falling and failing many times for me to finally learn the lesson that I couldn’t rely on my own wisdom.
So, what kind of hope does that leave anyone? To the common man who doesn’t believe in God enough to actually trust Him and His word—not much. But, to those who are willing to go out on a limb and believe and hope in something that is bigger than their physical eyes can see, they have a chance to reach the impossible.
God is the only source of true wisdom. When you start obeying Him, you will begin seeing life from a more spiritual perspective. God will begin to direct your heart to start making choices with your spiritual self in mind. Need some wisdom? Just ask!
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I have trusted in my own wisdom and sadly, it has actually moved me backwards instead of forward.
Today, I would like to commit to being wiser. I know since you created the whole universe, you might be able to direct me and my life in ways that I will be much better than my little brain can think of.
Lord, help me to be humble enough to admit that there is a lot I don’t know. Help me to be willing to follow your Holy Spirit’s leading even if it may not make sense in the natural. If I want supernatural results, I must follow things above and beyond what I would naturally do. I’m starting to see how you work, Lord.
Increase my faith when times get rough and I want to quit and go back to doing things ‘my way’. Remind me how of how ‘successful’ that has been for me in the past.
Give me hope to see a better future, Lord. In Jesus’ precious name, I trust you. Help me to trust you more everyday until I see your face. Amen.”
