“Lay not up for yourselves treasure upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal; But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal; For where your treasure is, there will your heat be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
Today’s Christian daily devotional
Christopher stacks the chairs close to the door. He sighs heavily. In less than an hour a stranger will be picking up a bits and pieces of his lifelong dream.
Chris remembers saving up for those chairs as if it were yesterday. With the pathetic amount he received from his Craig’s list add, he briefly considered just giving them away. But with bankruptcy just around the corner, every penny mattered.
Glancing around the empty restaurant almost felt like an out-of body experience for him. Chris and his family celebrated every special occasion there. Chris Jr. learned how to add and subtract on the register while his jovial wife was a permanent fixture on the scene. She loved bustling from table to table chatting with guests and making them feel as if they were visiting a home away from home.
Looking out the window, Chris had a hard time imagining how he was going to explain this failure to his son.
“No matter what you decide to do, as long as you work hard, you can succeed.” Chris recalls tosselling Jr.’s hair while showing him how to add up the sales from the day.
Turning, he scans the vacant place where the register had sat for over fourteen years.
Matthew 6: 29-21 reminds us that there is more to life than what we can touch with our hands. Sometimes in the bustle of living, it’s easy to forget the things that really matter.
Although Chris’ work ethic and family values are a rare and valuable asset in today’s world, there’s more to life than simply knowing how to make a living.
Are you leading your family into spiritual richness?
“Dear Heavenly Father,
There’s more to life than just work and success. I know that I need to find my balance.
Sometimes just providing for my family consumes my every thought. But, the most important provision I could offer them really comes from an intimate relationship with you.
Although I love my family, I am still only human. I will make mistakes and fail them. Lord, you will not fail us. You will provide us the peace that passes all human understanding.
Help me to be more balanced in the way I approach life. As a parent, I am to be a leader, a good example.
Help me to lead my family not only in words. Give me the eyes and heart to practice what I preach.
My children aren’t stupid. They see what I do and this makes a greater impact on the words I say.
Guide me Lord. I want to be the kind of parent that would bring a smile to my Heavenly Father’s face.
In Jesus’ name, for His glory, Amen.”
