“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.” Proverbs 14:12-13
Today’s Christian daily devotional
It’s late on a Friday night; my front doorbell rings like mad. Dashing to see what the commotion is about, I find my girlfriend Misty impatiently tapping her heel while she waits on my porch. Back in the day, the two of us were famous for our crazy weekend escapades.
I open the door. “Here; you deserve it.” Misty greets me by thrusting a half finished bottle of pinot into my stomach. She thunders right past me and straight into my kitchen.
“Got anything good to eat? I’m starving.” Her glassy eyes widen while she rifles through my refrigerator.
I stand in midst of my own kitchen, watching the chaos of “Hurricane Misty” quickly descend.
“I should have known not to come here.” Rolling her eyes, she grabs an apple off the counter and chews it in disdain.
“So, why are you here, then?” At this point in the night, my sarcasm can’t be restrained.
Before Misty burst through the door I was planning on some quiet time of prayer and Bible study. It was pretty apparent that as long as she decided to say, that wasn’t going to happen any time soon.
I feel a magnetic pull towards my cozy chair and Bible. They were only a few feet away…Misty senses my distraction.
“Do you wanna know what your problem is? You don’t know how to have real fun anymore.” She sneers while teetering over to my open Bible.
“You need to live life, Jules.” She lifts the apple above her head as if she’s making a dramatic toast with it.
“Not just read about it—especially in some crusty old book.” Misty chomps loudly on the fruit; as if it had somehow been magically transformed into the kind of junk food she was actually pining for. She moans in feign ecstasy.
I turn to fetch her a glass of water; within seconds, a loud thud echoes from the living room.
Rushing to where she was standing just a few seconds before, I find her sprawled out on my living room floor, completely oblivious to the world. Misty is down for the count.
Proverbs 14:12-13 reminds us that the solutions of man, no matter how right they ‘feel’ in the moment, always result in sorrow, heaviness and eventually death.
The life of a Believer is not always easy; God never promised that it would be. When we choose to follow the wisdom of His word, instead of the wisdom of the world, we will not only survive those challenges but will emerge stronger and wiser from them.
Life is tough. During those tough moments are you blossoming into your greater purpose or are you adding to your problems?
“Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the wisdom of Proverbs 14:12-13. Help me to keep these verses in mind whenever I am tempted to deal with my problems the way so many other people do.
I know that I have been called to think higher than the average person; and by having Christ reside within me, I know I am equipped to do just that.
In my moments of weakness, I ask for your wisdom, your blessings and your solutions.
With your help, I know that even my biggest nightmares can become my greatest testimonies if I chose to do things your way.
I rededicate myself today. From this day forward I am praying for the mind of Christ and the obedience to take that wisdom and obey it. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.”
