“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Is. 40:31
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“Stop the car!” My husband slams on the brakes as I grab an empty food carton and scurry out of the vehicle.
A little sparrow had hit our windshield and was fluttering but not flying away. The bird watched with large eyes as I gently scooped it into a hamburger box. I felt the box vibrating to the tiny heartbeat of the treasure contained within it.
Living in the city had limited my interactions with nature. Holding this frightened creature that was so scared and vulnerable wanted me to take care of it that much more.
My husband turned and checked the body for injuries; it seemed as if the bird was more shaken than hurt.
What a relief. I felt the warm beat of his little heart go from a quick patter down to a slow and steady calm. The chest stopped heaving and as we gave it a couple of minutes. He rested in our safe little haven until we felt he got his bearings straight.
Finding a secluded bush, we gently placed our makeshift nest into it and lovingly walked away when we felt confident that our furry friend was going to be okay.
Is. 40:31 reminds us that God has the same intentions to restore us, His children. When we flutter around, trying to make things happen we can end up in a bigger mess than if we stand still and wait upon the Lord. Waiting is not easy. Especially when you are waiting on the intangible and you cannot see or measure results from that trust in the Lord. But, this waiting will never go unnoticed by God. He sees this as a complete trust in Him and dependence on Him. Just as we most good men would have mercy on a defenseless sparrow, our good God has mercy on us. We cannot be carried to a safe haven if we are not waiting on the only one who knows where that is. God knows what you need, even when you don’t.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
What an amazing revelation of how much we humans depend on you. My pride has stopped me from this in the past. I have fluttered around making a bigger mess out of my life.
I have created more chaos and confusion as I tried to find my way. Lord, you know the way I should go. I trust you. Can you build that trust to be unwavering? I want it to be so strong that it does not matter how difficult the circumstance is, I will be patient enough to just wait on you to guide me through it.
I am injured, but not broken. I want to rest in you. And, when I am ready, I expect that you will be the wind beneath my wings. I know that with you, I will soar to a whole new level of life. You will take me to places that I could have never have taken myself. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.”
