“Ask, and it shall be given you; see, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Matt. 7:7-8
Today’s Christian daily devotional
My coffee order is waiting for me at the barista stand, but my attention is drawn to the rack of cards standing next to the cream and sugar. I could spend hours looking at greeting cards, so an extra two minutes goes by quickly for me.
My husband clears his throat in that all-to-familiar way. He wants his coffee. I take his hint and pick up the drinks.
“If you ever want to surprise me with something romantic, I really love the cards they sell here.” I smile as I present his cup of favorite addiction. He raises a brow as he looks up from his newspaper.
“I see you haven’t picked up the art of subtlety yet, have you?” The grin peeking from the corner of his mouth reflects his playful tone.
“You can’t get what you want if no one knows you want it.” I sip my tea and smile right back, not missing a beat.
“There is no beating around the bush with you.” His sly grin breaks into a big smile and we both click mugs as we laugh together.
About two weeks later, as we headed out the door for our nightly walk, John slipped an envelope into my hand.
Opening it, I discovered the exact card I had been admiring while we were in the coffee shop. Unbeknownst to me, John was actually paying attention to my little desires while I was consumed in my own little world.
In Matthew 7:7-8, the Bible challenges us to be bold in prayer and to ask for what we want. In my heart, I believe that this is because it actually gets God inspired. When we come to Him with specific requests, when our prayers are specifically answered He cannot be denied the full credit. Our faith increases and our intimacy grows every time we experience God and His good nature.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I believe I have not been coming to you with bold and specific requests because there has been a fear in my heart that you will not answer them. There is an underlying fear that big prayers will only reap big expectations and thus lead to even bigger disappointments.
This attitude is wrong and it is not helping me in any way. How can I get all the good things that you want for me if I do not trust you enough to ask for them?
Today is a new day and I am committing to a new way of praying. I ask that you give me a heart that is bold and trusting of you, Lord.
I pray that I only make the kind of requests that line up with your will so you can bless me with a definite answer that is tangible.
In Jesus’ name, I come boldly before you Lord and ask that you give me a heart to pray your will be done in my heart, my life and my prayer life. Amen.”
