“And while He yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss Him. But Jesus said unto him, ‘Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?” Luke 22:47-48

“Oh momma! Turn up the radio…it’s my favorite song!” Little Bethany bounces in her car seat with glee. Carol smiles as she cranks up the stereo.
She never really paid attention to the popular song that seemed to continuously loop on their favorite radio station. It was surprising to notice that her sprite five year old sang flawlessly along.
As they hovered at the stoplight in their SUV, Carol paid attention to the words for the first time. It was far easier for her to do when her favorite little person was the one belting the chorus:
“In the most biblical sense, I am beyond repentance,
Fame hooker, prostitute wench vomits her mind,
But in the cultural sense I just speak in future tense,
Judas kiss me if offense, don’t wear your condom next time,
I wanna love you,
But something’s pulling me away from you,
Jesus is my virtue,
And Judas is the demon I cling to,
I cling to…”
As Carol listened on, her smile faded into a solemn stare. She turned off the radio but the silence didn’t last for long.
“Mommy! Don’t turn it off. The song’s not over!” Bethany kicked her feet against the seat in front of her.
The vision of her little angel singing those vile words was hard for Carol to shake out of her head. Ignoring Bethany’s rant, she rolled down the window, hoping that the fresh air would change the atmosphere.
In Luke 22:47-48 we read about the betrayal of Jesus by His disciple and good friend, Judas. Hypocrisy and betrayal aren’t qualities that most parents would encourage their children to practice. Yet in today’s culture the spirit of rebellion lives on. Sadly, it’s not only thriving, but sucking the very lifeblood of the young and impressionable ears that are hungry and listening. Many of these children aren’t as fortunate as little Bethany–they don’t have a parent that is home long enough to lead or guide.
God designed human beings with the wonderful capacity to learn and be influenced by the things we see, hear and touch. If songs didn’t have the power to convince people, advertisers wouldn’t bother plunking millions of dollars into commercials catchy little jingles.
This element of influence goes mainly undetected, because many people don’t bother to take it seriously. Usually, by the time a parent is aware of the heavy impact of these choices; it almost feels too late to undo the subliminal damage that has been done.
What character qualities would you like to see in your children? If you start paying attention today, you and your children will reap the benefit of your investment for a lifetime. I think your kids are worth it. Do you?
“Dear Heavenly Father,
You have given me a precious gift. A child to love, nurture and lead.
In the business of my everyday life, I have forgotten to pay attention to the little things that my little one may be absorbing.
Lord, forgive me for not keeping a better watch over what my child listens to and watches on the radio and television.
I want my kid to have the best kind of future. So, I realize that I must lay a foundation of excellence today.
Lord, bless me as I try to follow your lead. Show me how to guard my family and home and keep them safe.
Give me wisdom beyond my years of experience and help me to not give up as I create new boundaries.
I want to give my child the best chance at a bright and healthy future that is filled with obedience and not rebellion. In Jesus’ precious name, help me to be the kind of parent that will blessings to the future generations with my family, Amen.”
