“And the Lord answered me, and said, write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but as the end it shall speak, and not lie; though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come it will not tarry.” Habakkuk 2:2-3
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“Dr. Cho is running late. You’re next in line, though.” The receptionist smiles apologetically while she closes the glass partition.
In the years that our family had been seeing Dr. Cho, he has never once been on time. It is summertime and I am thinking of a million other useless things I could be doing right now.
I roll my eyes and try to find a magazine that I have not read before. Thumbing through the pile of National Geographics that are so ancient they could be considered historical pieces themselves; I slide down my chair and sigh in the most dramatic way a 13 year old could.
My boredom compels me to look around the room. The office looks a lot like my grandmother’s home. Old dried flowers limply stand on the magazine table and the faded wallpaper is peeling up at the corners. The room looks as if the sun has bleached it of all life. The color of everything seems to be the same: wheat with a touch of mauve. For a dentist’s office, the combo is a rather nauseating choice. A plaque hanging above the receptionist’s station reads: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” I can’t stop my eyes from rolling again. This office is a torturous holding tank.
“Julia, Dr. Cho is ready to see you now.” I am relieved for a second and then my heart sinks even lower; knowing there is another kind of torture behind the plywood door.
The beaming receptionist leads me to my chair. Clipping the paper bib to my neck, I cringe at the sound of a drill. The chalky, smoky scent of ground teeth fills the air.
“Why hello there.” Dr. Cho chirps from behind me.
“Hi.” I mumble with minimal effort, not bothering to twist my neck to see him.
“Let’s see if you’re ready to get those braces off today.” He says while flipping through my charts.
Dr. Cho has been promising “next month” for over a year. My trust in him was flimsy at best.
Opening my mouth and silently holding my breath for my prayers to finally be answered, I tried to read his mind by the expression of his face. Reading a face that is half hidden behind a surgical mask is not the easiest thing to do.
“I think your ready. Today is your lucky day.” He kicks his heels, rolling his stool and removing his rubber exam gloves in one gracious swoop. Silently nodding his head motioning for his assistant to get the proper tools.
I am speechless; my past experience has made me very skeptical of Dr. Cho and his flippant words.
Within a half an hour, my years of hiding my smile endless visits for brace tightening had finally come to an end. Through the forced patience of Dr. Cho, my misaligned teeth were now the beautiful work of art he had spoken of. His vision became my reality, and I was enjoying every second of his labors and my waiting.
In Habakkuk 2:2-3 we are encouraged to write down the visions that we feel God has for our lives and trust that in His perfect time we will see the fruition of that vision. While we do this action in faith, we start the process of blossoming into something better. This activity will encourage and inspire us on the days when we need it most.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for making man in your image. We were not created to stay stagnant. We were created to form and develop into a richer existence as time goes on.
Sometimes I forget that the way things are today, are not how they will always be and I have the power to turn my life in another direction.
Give me the vision I need to go where you want me to go and do what you want me to do.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and I want you to prevent me from making the kind of mistakes that I have a tendency to keep making over and over again.
It is time for a new vision and a new inspiration. I am ready to see that you can make of me. In Jesus’ name, and all for His glory, Amen.”
