When I say, “Nike”, what do you think of? “McDonalds.” Now what comes to your mind? What about Elliot Spitzer? This fun little game is a lighthearted way of showing the importance of a name. Believe it or not, you are a living, breathing, walking, talking billboard. Your name is associated with anything you say, do or associate yourself with. Everybody has a name, and we all have a reputation that goes along with it. Ecc. 7:1 is a great reminder that the effort we take in shaping our character is the actual essence that makes others either want to be in (or want to avoid) our presence. If you have a hard time making friends, ask yourself if your character is a bit “funky”.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for reminding me that my name is important. It is my reputation I have earned through my actions and associations. Show me what “stinks” in my attitude and in my choices. A wise person would not be satisfied with their stench once they were aware of it. Show me what I need to change, and help me to change it, Lord. I will not attract good people to my life if I am not pleasant to be around. I want a good life and I know that will not just magically happen if I just WANT it. I must develop the kind of character that will attract good people. The best person to model myself after is Jesus Christ Himself. There was no one more humble, wise and powerful at the same time. I will not look to man for my example. I will look upon the life of Christ; and as I walk in his footsteps, Lord, help me to have the stamina to see this commitment through. A good name is rare. It will not be easy to come by, but with your help, I know we can build a good name together. In Jesus’ precious name, to make His name shine brighter than mine—through mine, help me. A
