“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.” 1 Cor. 10:13
Today’s Christian Daily Devotional
It is a lazy Saturday afternoon and I am patiently waiting to be seated in my favorite little breakfast nook. The place is alive with the bustling sounds of clanking coffee cups, laughing children and waitresses that take orders faster than the speed of light.
The smell of freshly buttered pancakes wafts in my direction. This heavenly sensation hits me before the plate passes my way to an excited boy who’s eyes are as big as saucers. My mouth waters as I watch him take his first bite. Maple syrup gleefully drips off his chin.
The agony of my wait gets lifted as the hostess calls our name and we get seated next to this fortunate little fellow. As I scan the menu, my eyes are delighted by the endless tantalizing options. My mouth is ready for a party.
Without warning, I get an interruption. I feel the familiar tug of conviction. My heart stops for a moment as I am reminded of my gluten allergy. The carbolicious delights I once enjoyed are no longer a satisfying experience for me. If I indulge, I pay for it. I have to admit, my heart sunk a little as I weighed my options and decided to enjoy the rest of the day by ordering the spinach egg white omelet instead.
“But I couldn’t help it!” is a common excuse for things we don’t want to take responsibility for. Many people complain as if they have no control over their own decisions. As reasonable, thinking individuals we must move beyond this childlike mentality if we are to ever enjoy a life of success and victory. Saying no to what we want is not easy, but it is possible. Indulging in sin may feel glorious in the moment, but just like a gluten allergy, the repercussions will come. Nothing feels better than taking control over the things that used to have control over you.
For Believers in Christ, God has supplied us with the supernatural ability to overcome any obstacle. If we take a moment to pray, give our temptations to Him; He will give us the strength to power through it. You CAN help yourself. God gave you the Holy Spirit just for that!
“Dear Heavenly Father,
Oh, sometimes I get so caught up in the moment—I chose what I know is not best because I just want it, and I want it NOW. Help me to look beyond the immediate and see the future of what my rash decisions will bring. Help me to take responsibility for my choices and not to brush them off as something that I cannot help. Lord, help me to help myself move beyond this selfish and childish stage. I want to grow in you and I know that involves growing pains. As I choose the things that are not natural for me, give me the supernatural joy of the Lord. This will be my strength. In Jesus’ precious name, thank you for making all things possible. Amen.”
