“A prudent man forseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Proverbs 22:3
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“I think you look good.” The deep voice startles me. I thought I had found my own little hiding place in a quiet corner of the convention center.
“Excuse me?” I rub my teary eyes in attempt to see who I am speaking to. A of a mop of raven hair framing steel blue eyes was walking closer to me; the face attached to the voice matched it perfectly.
My heart starts thundering in my ears. I wasn’t prepared for this kind of attention from this kind of stranger.
Pulling the sleeves of my shirt over my hands, I attempt to dry the tearstains from my cheeks.
“I’ve been watching you. My name is Alex.” He plops his body confidently next to mine.
I’m unsure if my loss for words is because he’s so handsome, or I’m so embarrassed. My conclusion it’s an odd concoction of the two. Either way, my mouth won’t consider moving for the life of me.
The stranger leans over to brush a wisp of hair off my cheek.
“Don’t worry. It will grow back. It’s just hair you know.” Alex chuckles as if hair and time were commonplace commodities.
At the impressionable age of fifteen, I felt like my world was ending. Getting a bad haircut was one thing. Watching your hair get wacked off by an Edward Scissor hands-wanna-be in front of an audience of hundreds–is quite another.
I was the naive’ victim/model of a hair show; my wounds were fresh. Within one hour, I could barely recognize my own reflection.
“Look what they did to mine.” He grabs a purple streak and twists it wonder. “I have no idea why you girls bother with stuff like this.”
“You can just dye your hair back. I’ve got to hibernate until I look decent again. ” Alex’s eyes seem to draw me out of my shell.
“With your looks, you can rock any hairstyle.” The twinkle in those baby blues just melts me. And, from the look on his face, he knows it.
“So, what are you doing after the show?” Alex doesn’t drop his gaze.
“I’m only fifteen. My dad’s supposed to be picking me up soon.” I feel stupid for saying it, but in about five minutes he would have found out anyway.
“No worries. I like to rock the cradle.” I stare blankly at him, not knowing what that implies exactly. (Yes, I was that naive’…) Something in my gut kicks in fear.
“Let’s go outside. I’ll show you my car while we wait for your dad.” He flips his body up and gallantly holds his hand out for me.
As we head towards the door, the golden rays of the setting sun make the parking lot look like it’s on fire.
“When I pick you up for our first date, I’ll be driving this.” He pointed to the red sports car in the corner of the lot.
My ears got warm when he said word: date. I had never been on one before…
In Proverbs 22:3 we are warned that a person who choses to remain ignorant will fall into a trap of their own demise.
Warning signals are inscribed into every human’s instinct. God has created this protective measure so we can take those warnings and do something with them.
If we are wise, we won’t ignore the signals. We will use those cautionary signs as an opportunity to come to the Lord for wisdom in prayer. Don’t be a fool. If you don’t know what you are doing, stop and take the time to pray to the God who can lead you out of ignorance and into divine wisdom.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
How many times have I looked back on my mistakes and realized that I have ignored the warning signs of my gut instinct?
I should have taken the time to investigate further, but instead I plowed through and made bad decisions because something inside me was curious.
Lord, my curiosity has almost killed me. I realize now that there is nothing out there I need to discover if it is not going to be good for me.
Sharpen my will and desires to match yours, Lord. Give me the ability to be instinctively repulsed by the activities, mindsets and people that will not be conducive to my spiritual growth and relationship with you.
Lead me into wisdom by opening my mind to new experiences, people and places that will nurture my soul, not destroy it.
Thank you for preserving me for this day of revelation. I am expecting to experience even more of it now that I am in the state of mind to receive it. In Jesus’ precious name, because I want to go from glory to glory, Amen!”
