“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will free from you. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the lord, and He shall lift you up.” James 4:7-10
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“I’ll call you right back. He’s on the other line.” Vicki’s girlfriend sighed before she quickly clicked over.
“Yes.” Attempting to hide the excitement in her voice, she spoke slowly.
“So, what are you doing right now?” Trevor’s voice was low and sexy.
That’s all it took for Vicki to forget that it had been over two months since Trevor had last called.
True to his predictable ways, he wanted to see her as soon as possible.
Vickie pushed the fact that it was almost 10:30 on a Wednesday night to the back of her mind. If she didn’t, that thought would start messing with her mind. Right now she had better things to concentrate on—like what she was going to wear!
She chatted with Trevor about where they would secretly meet. Rifling through her closet Vicki picked out the sexiest clothes that could be hidden beneath her sweatpants.
“I’ll see you soon, gorgeous.” Trevor breathed into the phone.
No one could make Vicki feel so good yet so bad at the same time. Her heart melted as she hung up and tossed the phone onto her bed. It pounded so hard; it felt as if it might beat right out of her chest. Vicki knew that in a few short hours it would be broken, again.
Her stomach flipped nervously as she got ready. Why couldn’t love be pain-free?
Vicki was addicted. And like any junkie, she kept coming back for more of her favorite ‘fix’ even if it meant it would slowly kill her tender heart.
James 4:7-10 reminds us that no matter how low we go, the minute we humble ourselves before God and remove all obstacles that come between Him and us, we can enjoy intimacy and joy in Him.
God is the creator of every good thing. He is love. There is nothing God wants more for His creation than to experience the depths of true love.
But, how can this happen if we don’t know what true love really is? How can we know it’s true if we haven’t actually experienced it?
When we give our hearts to God we are entrusting our most precious possession to the only one who is worthy of it. Unlike men, God will never break the heart, soul and spirit those who entrust all they are and have to Him.
Is your heart broken? God can fix it; but, only if YOU let Him.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
My heart has been broken so many times, I’m not sure that it’s even possible to be put back together again.
You said in your word that with YOU all things are possible. I’m going to hang onto this truth with everything I’ve got. Because, it’s all I’ve got…left.
Lord, show me how much you love me. I need to know. There have been so many people who have said these words to me, while simultaneously breaking my heart.
I’m having a hard time trusting in love. Lord, help me to trust you. Help me to not see you or treat you as if you were some flawed human. You are God.
Forgive me for putting other people and things before you. James 4:7-10 promises that if I give up being double- minded and trust only in you, you would heal me.
I’m ready to know what true love is. Today, in Jesus’ name, I give you my whole heart. It’s broken today. But, I believe if anyone can fix it, you can. Amen.”
