“Ye have head that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” Matthew 5:27
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“I caught David again.” Lila’s voice trembles as she tosses the glossy DVD on the kitchen table. Moments before, while she was dusting, she discovered it tucked safely behind the bedroom dresser.
What a stark contrast to see such lewd content in such a pristine and sterile environment. Yet, there it was. Blaring in garish bubble gum pink letters: “Sweet But Legal”.
It made no difference that Lila’s world looked absolutely picture perfect. The truth was her home had been disintegrating slowly over the years. Everything that actually mattered was ineptly standing on a shaky foundation of lies and deceit.
David and Lila were approaching their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Weren’t they supposed to be hitting the pleasant marriage stride and enjoying the good life that came with an empty nest? Instead, Lila felt like she had to compete with women who could easily pass for their daughter’s college roommates.
Whenever an attractive woman was in David’s vicinity, Lila’s heart ached to think about what her husband was really thinking. To her, there was a monster lurking beneath David’s kind and impish smile.
“So, what are you going to do?” Jane’s thin voice broke her thoughts. Lila watched on as she curiously turned the DVD over in her hands.
“I feel like such a fool. He promised that he was done with this garbage. He threw it all out in front of me! Now this! How can I ever trust David again? Doesn’t twenty five years mean anything to him?” Roughly grabbing the culprit from Jane’s clutch, Lila pulls out a roll of tape from the kitchen drawer. She attaches the crude piece to her refrigerator door, smack dab in the middle of her beautiful family photos.
Could there be anything more humiliating or painful than the betrayal of the ones you hold closest to your heart? Many people feel uncomfortable when they read Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:27. This is because it takes the sin of infidelity to a whole new level! But, Jesus spoke the truth, even when the truth wasn’t exactly what the most of the people wanted to hear. After reading the wisdom of Matthew 5:27, are you ready to handle the truth of where you stand in God’s eyes today? Forgiveness is only a prayer away.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I have justified my favorite sins for so long. I thought I could get away with them if hid them away. The fact of the matter is, I can never cover my thoughts from an all-knowing God.
Lord, I bow before you and ask that you expose my wicked heart. I promise to stop justifying and start repenting.
Help me to turn myself completely over to you.
I know that the blood of your dear Son is the only thing that can wash me clean again. It is always available whenever I ask for it and I am ready to receive that cleansing power right now.
In Jesus’ precious name, help me to remember that when I feel like I have to hide something, I am not in your will. Amen.”
