“Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than a house full of sacrifices with strife.” Proverbs 17:1
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“You’re three hours late.” Agne rolls her eyes and turns her back on Michael, facing the cold plate of spaghetti that doesn’t look so appetizing anymore.
“I told you my boss needed me to stay late. You know how messed up the shifts are. They’re so many changes in my department.” Michael grabs a piece of garlic bread from his plate, leaning into Agne for a kiss.
Agne turns her cheek.
“I thought this is what you wanted.” Michael’s empty stomach just intensifies his anger.
“Wanted? What makes you think I want to have dinner alone…again?” But his fire only lit her’s.
“Are you serious? All you ever talk about is how you wish you lived in a nicer house and had better clothes. How’s that supposed to happen if I don’t pick up shifts when they’re available?” Michael shoves his chair back and stomps through the hallway, right back out the front door he just walked in from.
In this fast-paced life it’s hard to avoid getting caught up in the lie that ‘more is more’. And even though the Bible was written several thousand years ago, Proverbs 17:1 speaks a simple and timeless truth most of us can easily relate to today.
What are you willing to relinquish to add more peace to your household? Sometimes it just takes a little teamwork to reprioritize what’s really important. At the end of the day, the quality of our lives will be measured by the memories we have made with the people we love, not the material goods we can’t even take with us.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
You have blessed me with so much. I must be blinded by my blessings, because for the longest time my only thought was how I could get more.
This has only led me into a deeper sense of failure and sadness; because I can’t ever seem to get enough.
Lord, I wasn’t meant to live with goals that are so self-serving and one-dimensional.
Life is so short. I want to have a house of peace, not a place of stress to come home to.
Show me what I can do without and how I can give to others from the overflow of what I have right now.
Open my eyes to see the blessings I already have and help me to appreciate them, not take any of them for granted anymore.
I am sorry that I have to ask for your help with this, but I know that I am praying your will and if I depend on you to help me through this, it will be done.
In Jesus’ precious name, thank you for my blessings. Amen.”
