Today’s Christian daily devotional
Benny buttoned up his denim jacket and waddled up to his favorite warehouse superstore. The automatic doors thrust open and Benny could faintly hear the Hallelujah Chorus playing in his head as it did.
“Good afternoon, sir. May I see your I.D.?” A friendly greeter dressed in blue waves him in.
Old Benny was prepared; he retrieved the card from his Velcro wallet while in the parking lot. Flashing the woman a knowing smile along with his identification he straightened his back as best he could as he shuffled through the wide doorway.
Grabbing an oversized cart to prop his shrinking body, Benny slowly pushed it along. It served more for his traveling ease than to actually cart products. But, every cumbersome step Benny took was purposeful; he was a man on a mission.
“Hey there Lois!” Benny’s boyish eyes twinkled as gazed at favorite employee. Lois was standing in a booth at the end the frozen food section.
“Oh, Benny! It’s been quite a while. I’ll bet you’ve worked up an appetite.” She flirtatiously handed the senior citizin two hot pot stickers wrapped in a cocktail napkin.
Benny winked and nodded. “Now that’s my girl.” He chatted with Lois and left with a few more goodies tucked neatly into his jacket pocket.
About two hours passed before Benny left the store. His protruding stomach was aching; overtaxed with rich samples.
But, Benny grinned while rubbing his belly triumphantly. It was his trophy. He was also smiling for a bigger reason. Benny knew that when his daughter came to visit, there would be no evidence of his reckless eating binge.
After Benny’s last doctor’s visit, his daughter had Benny on a strict low-sodium and low cholesterol diet. Becky was very concerned about her father’s health. He was eighty-six. But if Becky could have her way, she wanted her precious dad to live forever.
This diet only brought out the passive-aggressive nature of old Benny. He wasn’t about to let his daughter tell him what to have for dinner or how to enjoy his life!
As far as Benny was concerned, today, he had sneakily discovered a masterful way of not only bucking the system, but of also avoiding payment for those indulgences—samples were FREE!
As Galatians 6:8-9 mentions, many people think like Benny when it comes to their favorite sinful behaviors.
They deceive themselves into thinking that that because there might not be an actual person to witness their sin; they’re free to wipe their mouths and claim no harm was done.
But, the truth is: God is always there. He always sees every sin—even if we don’t see Him.
Benny didn’t really get away with very much. When his doctor appointment came around, his sodium and cholesterol levels were still through the roof. He had sadly only cheated his own health and quality of life. This not only affected Benny, but the people who loved and took care of him as well.
The real trick to avoiding regret is pretty simple: Don’t hurt yourself to begin with!
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I know you see it all. Yes, I know this! But sometimes I see so many people getting away with things and I’m tempted to go for the good life, too!
Lord, nobody gets away with anything. Even if it looks like they do.
I want to live before you with a clean conscience. I want to try my best and live with the integrity that even if no one sees my good behavior, you do. And, you are the only one that matters and the only one that has the ability to reward.
Lord, I know that I don’t have to do everything perfect to get you to love me more. You loved me so much you sent Jesus to die for my sins.
My thankfulness is what propels this desire to please you. I am grateful for all you have done and I want to do right by you, for you.
I know anything less is actually cheating myself in the long run and life is too short to live with regrets. Bless me to avoid as many as I can, Amen.”
