“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time; Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:6-8
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“It’s not a big deal.” Raquel smacked confidently on her gum.
“Really? You act like taking your clothes off in front of a bunch of strangers is easier than this biology test.” I toss my notes and pencil aside, intrigued by her nonchalance.
“Because it is. It’s only hard your first time. After you see that money, honey…” Raquel laughs nonchalantly. “Nothing is too hard.”
After taking a break for snacks, we went back to studying for our upcoming test. But, my mind kept drifting to Raquel’s easy way of looking at things. Perhaps I was ‘overthinking’ life. My bills were pilling up and it wasn’t really working in my favor that I kept changing my major. What a daunting task trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life! In the meantime, my indecision was costing me time, money and anxiety.
“So, how much do you make a night?” I close my biology book once again.
“Enough to buy this with one shift.” She motioned her chin towards the Louis Vuitton that was fashionably resting on her stack of papers.
Just one minute before I was worried about my college tuition bills. Now, I was intrigued by finally being able to afford my own taste. Unfortunately mine has always been more refined than my actual budget.
“There’s an amateur night this Thursday night. I’ll give you a ride if you want to make some quick cash.” She smiled. “It would be nice to have some company. It’s a long drive from campus to downtown Chicago.”
What seduced me the most was how Raquel never seemed to be worried or stressed by basic daily troubles. I wanted that kind of peace of mind more than anything.
“It can’t hurt to check it out, right?” I nervously picked at my fingernails.
“That’s the spirit! What’s the point of life if you can’t have fun while you’re here?” She high-fived me; I weakly went along, unsure if I was ready for what was coming next.
In 1 Peter 5:6-8 we are cautioned to give our cares to the Lord. By verse eight we are heavily warned about the how the enemy of our souls will seek to destroy us. He is on the prowl to take advantage of our fears.
What fears are you facing today? STOP. Don’t do a thing before you seek the wisdom of one who can see your life from a much larger perspective. He will provide a way out. But you can’t hear His wisdom if you aren’t listening for it.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I am in a mess. I have given into the spirit of fear and my troubles are compounding all around me.
Lord, I repent that I did not seek your wisdom first. Forgive me and provide me a way out of my circumstances. Show me the mistakes I have made so I will not make them again.
Open up my eyes to see the paths you have set before me that will lead me out of the darkness and into your light.
As I choose to go your way, opposition will come against me. But in the end I will be glad I followed you instead of myself.
You are the only path that will lead to still waters and the peace that passes all understanding.
Help me to be patient as I learn to rely on you and not myself.
If this situation feels impossible for me, I will remember that with you all things are possible and God is truly all that I need. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.”
