“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” Genesis 1:27
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“Why should I even bother listening to you?” Anna stormed out down the hallway seething heavily. “You’re not even my real mother.” With one last defiant look, she slammed the door to her private sanctuary.
Her mother stared at the thin piece of timber that stood between her and the girl that was breaking her heart. She paused for a second and then turned to retreat silently down the stairs. Mrs. Masters was a bit too tired for today’s battle.
On the other side of that wooden door, Anna tossed her body onto her pink feather duvet. Pressing her face into her favorite pillow, she groaned until the pain subsided.
After exhausting every tear her body could conjure, Anna just allowed the pain sit numbly in her chest. Pushing back a lock of her fiery red hair that had latched onto her moist cheek, she couldn’t help but wonder what her real mother looked like.
Did she have curly red hair and dimples just like Anna’s? Looking at her reflection in the mirror from across her bed, Anna was reminded once again that she looked nothing like her adopted parents. She had no reason to complain—the family that took her in treated her as one of their own. They had so much love to give; they wouldn’t let a barren womb stop them from finding a child who desperately needed it.
But, no matter how well things seemed to go for her, Anna couldn’t shake the unanswered random questions that floated in and out of her head like dandelion puffs on a windy summer night.
What happened to her real father? Was her affinity to grilled cheese and tomatoes a genetic predisposition? Why did her birth mother give Anna away to a couple of strangers?
Her eyes drifted to the small window above her bed. Somewhere, out there in this large and vast world, there were real answers to the questions that seemed to burn a hole straight through her already fragile heart. And despite the walls Anna firmly erected around it, there was an abundance of love on the other side of her bedroom door.
Sighing from complete exhaustion, she looked down at her hands. They were slim, rosy and smattered with a delicate sprinkling of freckles. Anna marveled at how evenly placed they were–as if someone had carefully painted each one. Would it ever be possible to find out who Anna Masters really was?
This question rolls around the curious minds of almost every person who takes the time to marvel at God’s glorious creation; especially the ones who’ve had pieces of their identity puzzle missing.
It is wonderful to get confirmation from God Himself in Genesis 1:27. No matter what blood pumps through our veins, this fact remains: There is a God in heaven that has made us each one of us. He relishes in the fabulous creation that was formed by His hands, in His very image.
Our bodies are just a temporary and fading vessel for the soul that God longs to connect with.
Are you willing to see yourself the way God fully created you to be? You are not just living, breathing flesh and blood. You are a creature that was made in God’s image. And He so desperately wants you to know just how loved you are—no matter what kind of rejection this world has made you feel. Love rejected can never be enjoyed. It simply sits there like an unwrapped present. Will you accept God’s love?
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I’ve wanted to know exactly why I was placed on this planet. What am I here for? I feel like an orphan, with no sense of identity.
Deep in my heart, there is a yearning to know who you are. But, part of me is scared to discover that you won’t show yourself to me.
I have heard of others sharing a deep and intimate relationship with you. Is that possible for me, too?
Help me to discover who I am; through what you have to say about me in the Bible. Give me the ability to understand your word, and apply your directions on how to live my life.
I need love. There. I said it. Can you please love me back to health and happiness? I can’t seem to do it on my own. In Jesus’ precious name, Today, I receive all the love you have to give me. Amen.”
