“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Prov. 1:7
Today’s Christian Daily Devotional
“Mommy! Get this one!” I watch an excited young girl squeal as she clutches her personal magazine selection. Smiling proudly I catch her gaze at the provocative girl displayed on the cover. Her excitement was infectious and I had to glance and see what the commotion was all about. My heart sunk into the pit of my stomach as my eyes focused on the image staring back at me.
A famous young teenager (who one could say without hesitation would be considered the most popular trend-setter among most young American girls) was posing with her mouth glossed and puckered. She was beckoning from the cover of the closest magazine that a newsstand can sell without being labeled “porn”.
This publication is notorious for pushing boundaries in the name of proclaiming “woman’s liberation”. It has always been on the cusp of controversy as it proudly promotes no-strings attached sex, sexual tips from adult porn stars and a myriad of information that would make anyone in mixed company blush.
With a single swipe of lip-gloss, the bar of female grace has been dropped another degree lower. The priceless gift of innocence has been sold out to whatever will invoke controversy and sell more magazines.
I watched the mother gingerly place the magazine back on the rack while she quickly searched to quiet her child with another distraction. It is painfully obvious that I am not the only one who is disturbed. God help us as we navigate through this world that wants to devour the hearts, eyes and minds of the innocent ones who depend upon us to protect them.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
The wickedness of this generation is no longer hiding. Before, you only find it wrapped in black wrapper or tucked away behind a windowless shop in a dark alley. It is now on display next to the gum and the candy in a brightly lit grocery store. Lord, protect my family. Help me to be a solid rock in a world that wants to sink every bit of morality that I try to instill in them at home. When I put them out into the world, give them hearts that will be drawn to good things. Open their eyes to see the traps of temptation, and give them the godly wisdom that can only come from a life that is centered in God and His ways. Deliver my household from evil, as we chose to serve you today. In Jesus’ precious name, make our lives fruitful for you, Amen.”
