“A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.” Prov. 13:22
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“I can’t believe it!” My mother’s hands are shaking as she clutches the letter she pulled from the mailbox a few seconds before.
It is amazing that a single slip of white paper could transform her mood in a matter of seconds. I wondered what good news the letter contained.
My mom sprinted towards the house leaving me standing on the front lawn. This was not typical of her overly protective demeanor. But, the lapse was only temporary. Quickly realizing that her shadow was missing after hearing the screen door slam shut right behind her, she quickly turned around to scoop me up from the patch of grass that I was playing in.
“Congratulations, Julia. You just won the Illinois school board lottery!” I blinked, not understanding what the hoopla was about.
“You’re going to one of the best magnet schools in Chicago!” We could not afford a private school and our family did not live on most ideal block in town. Apparently, my name was drawn and I was now officially registered and enrolled in a decent kindergarten. She showered me with kisses as if I had something to do with the good luck raining down on me.
My mother was a lonely child growing up with her factory working Japanese parents and grandparents. She never had memories of bonding with kids her age and did not have the opportunity to earn her college degree until later in life.
Determined to create for us the kind of nurturing home environment she never had, she worked hard so my siblings and I could enjoy the things she never had an opportunity to. A good education was important to her.
In Proverbs 13:22, the Bible says that a righteous person will invest in the future generations and secure an inheritance that will bless the family lineage. A righteous person has their priorities straight and will be rewarded so abundantly that the wealth of the wicked will be spent on them.
As a parent, are you looking past today and making choices that will benefit your children’s future? Your righteousness and sacrifice will be rewarded when you take the time to invest in the things that matter to God, and your family matters very much to Him.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for blessing me with a mother that took the time and care to invest in my future. I squandered away much of her investment with my own foolish choices, but I serve a God who can redeem all things that are lost.
Lord, I need to be a blessing to my household, especially my parents who sacrificed so much. Bless me to be a good inheritance to them, and to leave a great inheritance for the future generation.
In Jesus’ precious name, please honor my mother and father and use me to do just that, Amen.”
