“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God: in Him will I trust.
Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with his feathers and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at they right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shall thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most high, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and the adder; the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hat set His love upon me, therefore will I deliver Him; I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.” Psalms 91: 1-16
Today’s Christian daily devotional
These words are infamous. I have seen several different versions of them printed on refrigerator magnets, bookmarks and even sewn onto ornate pillows.
How many times have you heard Psalms 91 uttered by a person dealing with a tragedy?
But, honestly, what comfort do these words really have?
Yes, they are some of the most beautiful words of promise and protection from God. But, these words were only meant to be a comfort for a select few.
Now, I know in today’s politically correct society, that last sentence will ruffle a few feathers!
But, to be frank, the ones who are promised this peace, comfort and protection are the people who actually, truly worship God.
Read verse nine slowly: “Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation.”
Let’s break that verse down in today’s jargon. The dictionary defines the word ‘habitation’ to mean: “A place of residence, a dwelling, an abode.”
A child of God is a person who has the spirit of God dwelling on the inside of them. This is a person who has asked Jesus Christ to make His abode inside their personal body. This is why the physical body of a Christian is commonly referred to as ‘The Temple’.
One who bows to Allah, cannot claim the promises of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. A person who follows the teachings of Buddha could never reap the benefits of a God that he doesn’t worship. The benefits of God are reserved for the children of God.
Just as I could never claim the inheritance reserved for the bloodline of the Queen of England, one cannot try and cover themselves with the blanket of peace that Psalms 91 offers if they don’t have Christ dwelling on the inside of them. These people who try and claim the benefits of God without being family are only fooling themselves with empty words.
It does not matter how many bookmarks, magnets, pillows or beads you have with that inscription. The words of Psalm 91 are meaningless if the God to whom Psalms 91 is referring is meaningless to you.
I’m not saying this to make anyone upset. I’m bringing attention to this fact because the last thing in the world I would want to do is give others a false sense of security by leading them to believe that Psalms 91 was a comfort meant for all men.
Psalms 91 can be for you. But, it has always been and will always be YOUR choice. God has given you the free will to choose whom you will serve. Do you want the comfort that the God of Psalm 91 promises to give? Get some comfort today.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I want comfort. I need peace. I have read those beautiful words numerous times and I must admit, they have always fallen flat for me.
Now I see why. How can I take comfort in the words of a God I don’t know and don’t serve?
That is why those words have never given me much peace.
Lord, I want the peace that Psalm 91 promises.
You said that Jesus could give me a peace that passes all understanding. I am not sure if Jesus really was who He said He was. But, if He was the Son of God, show me.
I promise to keep reading your word trying to discover more about Him and I am depending on you make things clear for my heart to understand.
Lord, open my blind eyes, loosen my deaf ears, and soften my hard heart. Bless me with what I need to see the truth.
And when the truth is revealed to me, I promise to follow it. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.”
