“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” Luke 16:10-13
Today’s Christian daily devotional
Dominick was running late. This went against his anal-retentive tendencies. Priding himself on running a tight ship, Dom knew didn’t become the head manager of the largest strip club in Chicago by accident. Unlike his fellow colleagues, Dominick took his responsibilities seriously.
Usually, on ‘off’ days like this, Dom would find himself cursing at every stoplight. But, today was different. He was different.
Dominick’s quick gait up the nightclub steps turned into a little hop. He stopped as soon as he noticed; chuckling inwardly.
“I’m a father now.” His mind reeled with the mixture of overwhelming joy and the new responsibilities that were just ahead.
“You’re late.” The daytime manager spoke coolly, not bothering to look up from the company logs.
“And you’re a jerk. Pricilla is home with the baby. We’re still adjusting.” Dominick’s smile faded back into his infamous steely slit.
“Chill out, Dom. I’m just busting your chops.” His college tossed a cigar, aiming at Dominick’s protruding belly.
“Congratulations, Big Daddy!”
Although he was large in size, his instincts were quick. Dominick wasn’t about to let that fresh Cuban hit the floor.
“You’ve got a hot recruit waiting in your office. After you’re done with her, we’ll celebrate.” He nodded towards the closed office door.
“Sure thing.” Dom tucked the rare cigar into his front pocket.
Opening the office door, he found a stunning brunette barely looking eighteen filling out a job application. Her patent heel tapped nervously on the leg of his desk.
“If you have any questions, let me know.” Plopping into his leather chair, he swiveled it in the direction of the computer.
Dom could tell the girl was nervous enough already; she didn’t need the extra pressure of his stare.
It took a lot of manpower not to gawk at the lovely creature before him. But, she would be half-naked soon enough; he had plenty of time for that later.
After a few minutes of uncomfortable silence, the girl handed back the plastic clipboard, her painted nails slightly trembling.
“You forgot to fill out your emergency contacts…Mary.” Seeing that name on the application almost caused Dominick to stutter.
“That’s my daughter’s name.” Dom’s mind reeled into overdrive, while he fumbled for his water bottle, a smattering of perspiration tickling his lower back. His mouth went dry as he stared into the big brown eyes in front of him.
“Oh, I know. I just can’t. If my dad was to ever find out I was stripping, he would kill me.” Mary’s tiny voice seemed to echo in Dominick’s head.
Usually, when this type of situation came up, Dom had his standard monologue to fall back on:
“You’re an adult now. You can make your own decisions. Your parent’s can’t control your life forever. But, by law we need to know who to contact unless there is an emergency. It’s not a big deal, we haven’t had an occasion to call any emergency number so far.”
But, those words Dominick had spoken hundreds of times over his seven-year career weren’t coming to mind…
In all his years of managing, Dom never allowed his personal convictions to effect his decision making process. But, today Dominick was a different man. He was no longer just a man; he was a father.
Luke 16:10-13 plainly reminds us that if we aren’t faithful in our stewardship of the little things, we won’t be capable of handling bigger blessings.
When we settle for worshiping money, there’s no capacity left in our hearts to serve God. Greed blinds and binds it’s victims. It is a god that won’t be satisfied with anything less than consuming all that you have…especially the most precious gifts that were never bought in the first place.
Life isn’t easy. Are you passing the tests that are before you today? God has offered supernatural help. His name is Jesus.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I hate hypocrites. Maybe that is why I can’t stand to look at my own reflection. I am ashamed.
Today, for the first time in a long time, I come clean. I admit that I am not alright. I’m a complete mess.
From the outside, I may look like I have my stuff together. But, inside I know what is really going on.
I have this twisted double-standard. I find my personal loopholes that help to ease my conscience into thinking I’m really not ‘that bad’.
Oh, Lord! It has been so long since I have taken the time to search the scriptures and find out just how wicked I am. Part of me is fearful of facing the truth of your word.
But, I know if things are ever to get better, I must bring the darkness of who I really am into the light of your scripture.
Lord, as I read the Ten Commandments, convict me of my sins.
I know that when Jesus came to earth, He was The New Covenant. He came to break me from the chains of my own sin.
When I asked Jesus into my heart, He not only saved me from an eternal death, but promised to empower me for this life.
He also wrote the laws on my heart. By ignoring his promptings for so long, I have seared my own conscience.
I regret this, for this has taken me down a dark and ugly path in life.
I’m ready to turn around, Lord. I’m willing to tap into the power that lives within. Help me to obey the leading of the Holy Spirit.
In Jesus’ precious name, anoint my eyes to see your scripture from a whole new context. Give me feet that will be ready to move in whatever direction you lead. Amen.”
