“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” Prov. 22:1
Today’s Christian Daily Devotional
“Taste it, it is the best.” I can still see the wrinkled, rough, paw-like hands of my grandfather reaching out to bless me with a stale piece of brown bread. “When you think of pumpernickel bread, think of your Grandpa B.” He proudly patted me on the head, leaving his legacy in my attentive and hungry five-year old mind. To this day, the smell of stale bread always reminds me of my Grandpa B. Sadly, that is all I remember of him.
My grandfather was not the kind of grandpa you see pictured on greeting cards. He never taught me how to fish, played charades with me or laughed at my silly jokes. He never took the time to notice anything insignificant in his life, and that included me and my brothers and sisters.
For years my heart questioned why I was not worthy of his love or attention. Over time I began to see that my worth had nothing to do with my grandfather’s misconstrued priorities.
The legacy we leave may not be grand like we want it to be, but it will always have an impact on those we love, or the ones who love us. What will you be remembered for? What do you want to be remembered for? If you take the time to really ask yourself that question, you can have a chance to start investing in the things that really matter, like the “little” things (people) that are hungry for the love and legacy we have to give to them.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
My heart aches to be loved. The rejection and hurt I have encountered over my lifetime has been almost to heavy for my tender heart to bear. Help me. Help me to stop dying inside every time I think of the people who should have been there for me and weren’t. Help me to not be angry anymore. Help me not only to forgive them but also to love them. This will be exposing my tender heart to more vulnerability, so I am asking for you to give me the strength and the love I need to overcome my past. Help me to create a good future for me and my family so that I will always be remembered as a person who never gave up and always loved because it was the right thing to do; not the easiest. In Jesus’ precious name, God bless me to leave a legacy of unconditional love, Amen.”
