“Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whether thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” Exodus 34:14
Today’s Christian daily devotional
CNN, the BBC and Fox News…I flip the channels and watch many different spins on two grown men bickering like high school kids…as the plight of our country hangs in the balance. This isn’t just an annoyance to witness. What a heavy weightiness and a high level of mistrust and expectancy on both ends of these two warring political parties!
My young friend Daniel comes to mind. Dan is a military man that risks his life to defend our country. Millions of people like Daniel have given beyond what can be returned for our democratic liberties; to treat this lightly is to strip the value from the sacred honor of voting. One must never take freedom for granted; it always comes at a heavy price.
As I read Exodus 34:14 and election day quickly approaches, this year, I envision an even higher and deeper perspective. Of course, like any other human being, I come to the voting booth with my own personal passions, ideologies and reasons behind the boxes that I check.
Along with bringing my mind and heart to the voting polls, I will also be taking careful consideration of what my most important advisor feels about the decisions I make. I want to see what God feels about my choices.
What will be the ultimate decider in my decision making process when I cast my vote on Tuesday? Will it be: money, race, family pressure or Union pressure?
Whatever my choices are, the bottom line is; my vote reflects the state of my heart and where my loyalties lie.
In this pivotal election year, I challenge you to go deeper than the just the issues that are presented in the media. If you are a man or woman of God, look into the word of God. Base your decision making on your research of the word and your communication with God in prayer.
When you go to the voting booth to cast your decisions, remember you are not just a representative of your family, race, union affiliate or any political party. If you are a Believer in God, you are a representation of Him. Would He be proud of your choices?
“Dear Heavenly Father,
There are so many issues and so much pressure in this life.
Sometimes, I feel so conflicted I let fear paralyze me. You did not create us to live and react to life in fear.
Help me to keep you in mind as I go to the election booth. Remind me that I will be accountable for the choices I make in this life. Help me to see beyond myself and look at the higher good and purposes of my choices. I am an important link in the chain of humanity. I must seek to act responsibility and with integrity. Anything less would be to take the freedom we have been given and to ungratefully crush it. The future generations will be affected by the choices we make for them today.
We set the foundation for tomorrow. Guide me to see things your way. If there is a personal wound within me that is affecting my thinking, show me. Give me the courage to ask you to forgive and heal me of it, so I can make choices from a place of healing, not of pain or anger. In Jesus’ precious name, bless every Believer and me, as we want to heed your voice and yours alone. Amen.”
*A special thank you to Daniel and all of our military men and women who have dedicated so much for the freedom we enjoy in America. May freedom continue to reign!
